KOCHI: Released recently, Neeli, the latest music video from filmmaker BIGIL BENOY, has been gaining traction on social media for its visual ambition and folklore-inspired storytelling.
Based on the legend of Kalliyankattu Neeli, one of Kerala’s most enduring folklore characters, the video offers a cinematic interpretation that emphasises the character’s divine and powerful aspects. While recent films and web series have explored different versions of the folklore figure, the makers say Neeli remains rooted in the traditional narrative of Kalliyankattu Neeli, presenting her through a contemporary visual language while highlighting her spiritual and divine dimensions.
BIGIL BENOY has taken on multiple responsibilities for the project, serving as its writer, cinematographer and director. The production involved a 24-hour continuous shoot and brought together more than 40 artistes and technicians.
The transformation of the lead character was designed by prosthetic specialist Sethu Sivanandan, while the visual effects were executed by Ajith Balan. Their contributions, the makers believe, played a key role in shaping the visual identity of the project. Editing for the music video was handled by newcomer Ruvan.
Featuring vocals by Madhu Balakrishnan and Chitra Arun, the music video stars Gopika Keerthy in the title role, with Sneha appearing in another prominent role.
Conceived as more than just a music video, Neeli seeks to bring Kerala’s folk heritage and traditional beliefs to contemporary audiences through a cinematic visual experience. Since its release, the project has attracted attention for combining folklore, music, prosthetic artistry, visual effects and modern filmmaking techniques, creating a visually rich work that continues to generate conversations among viewers on social media.
