Panchayat Patti is directed by Mohandas, who has also handled the story, screenplay and dialogues. The film is presented by Vision i Media. The story is set in a village called Panchayat Patti and revolves around village life, traditions, love, family relationships and the problems faced by young lovers.
The film begins with a couple of girls entering Panchayat Patti to understand the village and the lifestyle of its people. An elderly man explains the history of the place. The village was once an open piece of land where nobody had settled permanently. Later, people started arriving and building their lives there. The first man to settle in the village eventually became its Panchayat leader, and his family became an important part of the village’s history.
The story takes an interesting turn when the Panchayat leader’s wife gives birth to twin boys. Since nobody can identify which child was born first, the family gives them the names Amavasai and Pournami. Amavasai, played by Anna Prabhakaran, and Pournami grow up constantly fighting with each other. Their rivalry becomes a major source of trouble for the entire village.
To control their fights, their father divides the responsibility of being the village Nattamai between them. During the full-moon days, Pournami takes charge, while Amavasai becomes the Nattamai during the new-moon days. However, instead of solving people’s problems, their strange and harsh judgments create more trouble. The village people become frustrated with both of them, and even young lovers have to face their strict rules.
At the centre of the love story are Vishnu, played by Jai, and Kayalvizhi, played by Vinoshree. Vishnu works in Chennai but decides to leave his job and return to the village because of his love for Kayalvizhi. Although Amavasai and Pournami try to separate the couple, Vishnu and Kayalvizhi eventually get married. As a punishment, they are not allowed to enter the village and are forced to stay outside.
The situation changes when Vishnu’s friend Kannan, who has returned from the US, learns about what has happened. Concerned about his friend, Kannan joins hands with his friends and tries to find a way to bring Vishnu and Kayalvizhi back into the village. The gilli-danda game becomes an important part of their plan. How Kannan and his friends help the couple gain acceptance from the village forms the main part of the film.
The film also highlights how some village traditions and old-fashioned thinking can create difficulties for lovers. Even though society has changed, the film shows that certain attitudes towards love and relationships continue to remain backward. This social angle gives the film more meaning beyond its comedy and village-based entertainment.
Jai and Vinoshree are good in their respective roles and bring the emotional side of the love story naturally. Kesavan and Anna Prabhakaran give adequate performances, especially in their roles as the two rival Nattamais. The film introduces several new faces, but the performers appear comfortable on screen and do not make the film feel awkward or inexperienced.
On the technical side, the cinematography needs more attention, particularly in bringing out the beauty and atmosphere of the village. The editing is sharp, and the film does not feel unnecessarily stretched. The first half moves at a good pace, while the second half becomes slightly slow in its narration. The comedy is sensible and fits well with the situations. The songs are pleasant to hear, while the background score remains simple and supports the scenes without becoming too heavy.
Overall, Panchayat Patti is a good attempt by the team to tell a village-based story with comedy, love and a social message. The film has its share of entertaining moments and also speaks about the difficulties lovers face because of traditional thinking. With its simple storytelling, decent performances and sensible comedy, Panchayat Patti can be considered a sincere effort from the team.
Verdict: A decent village-based entertainer that mixes love, comedy and a social message.
